Groove Healing exists to bring the therapeutic effects of live and recorded music to everyone in need. From patients in healthcare facilities to individuals struggling at home with a variety of issues.
Groove Healing uses music to help people relieve physical, mental, and emotional challenges through its documented healing powers.
Groove Healing collaborates with healthcare professionals to train musicians to provide live music to those in need through a healing environment. We also collaborate with healthcare facilities and community organizations to educate about, and promote research in, the effectiveness of music in the healing process.
Why Groove Healing?
Those earphones the dentist offers when you plop in the chair aren't just for entertainment or blocking out the sound of the drill -- they're an adjunct to delivering pain relief in the form of music.
Scientists have been documenting the connection among music and pain relief, stress reduction and eased anxiety for decades, but new appreciation for brain structure and chemistry have helped boost understanding.
One study done last year found that when we listen to music we like, the brain releases the signaling molecule dopamine to bring on pleasurable sensations.
It's the same reward pathway activated by food, sex and drugs.
"Music might provide an alternative entry point to the brain, because it can unlock so many different doors into an injured or ill brain,” said Dr. Gottfried Schlaug, a Harvard University neurologist.
Pitch, harmony, melody, rhythm and emotion — all components of music — engage different regions of the brain. And many of those same regions are also important in speech, movement and social interaction.
If a disease or trauma has disabled a brain region needed for such functions, music can sometimes get in through a back door and coax them out by another route, Schlaug says.
